Power's out in Brattleberry...

...but that's not the worst of it--not by a long shot. Here's footage of water rushing through our little low lying town. These are real businesses owned by real neighbors. This kind of devastation merits federal assistance. The kind I was familiar with when worked at FEMA a lifetime ago. But hey, the hard right would have you believe that such aid is the equivalent of some dirty form of socialism. It's not. It's basic decency and the right thing to do. Something that used to be a given--no more.

Thank god no one was hurt in this particular flood (but that's about all that any magic deity can be thanked for when it comes to hurricane irene).
